Every Moon Phase, Explained
New Moon
The Moon sits directly between the Earth and Sun, invisible in the night sky. It's the astrological start of the lunar month โ a dark, quiet reset point. Traditionally the best time to set an intention: not a grand resolution, but one specific, nameable thing to move toward over the next 29 days.
Waxing Crescent
A sliver of light appears low in the western sky just after sunset. The energy here is tentative and forward-leaning โ less about big action, more about taking the first small, awkward step toward whatever was named at the New Moon.
First Quarter
Exactly half-lit, the Moon reaches the cycle's first real test. Traditionally read as a moment of friction โ a decision point or obstacle that shows whether an intention can hold up against resistance.
Waxing Gibbous
More than half lit and growing, this phase is about refinement rather than starting or finishing. Adjust, tend to details, and keep going โ the Full Moon is close but not here yet.
Full Moon
The Moon is fully illuminated and directly opposite the Sun โ maximum light, maximum visibility, and, per tradition, maximum emotional intensity. Things started at the New Moon tend to come to a head, for better or worse, around now.
Waning Gibbous
Just past full, the light begins to recede. A phase for integration โ digesting what the Full Moon revealed, and starting to loosen the grip on what already happened.
Last Quarter
Half-lit again, on the opposite side from the First Quarter. Read as a release point โ a natural moment to let go of what didn't work and clear space before the cycle resets.
Waning Crescent
The final sliver before the Moon disappears again. A rest phase โ low-energy on purpose, the quiet close of one cycle before the New Moon opens the next.
Every Moon Sign, Explained
Quick to Feel, Quick to Act
Feelings arrive fast and demand to be acted on immediately โ patience isn't the strong suit here. Comfort looks like autonomy: solving your own problem before anyone else gets a say.
Slow to Stir, Steady to Hold
Emotional security comes from routine, physical comfort and things staying put. Slow to upset, slower to let go once truly hurt โ but remarkably hard to shake once settled.
Feels Out Loud
Feelings get processed by talking them through, out loud, probably more than once. Emotional needs shift quickly, and boredom can masquerade as something bigger.
Home Is a Feeling
This is the Moon's own sign โ feelings run close to the surface and home and family matter enormously. Deeply attuned to others' moods, sometimes at the cost of its own.
Needs to Be Seen
Needs to feel seen and appreciated, not just loved quietly in the background. Generous with affection, but a wounded pride can take a while to soften.
Care as Action
Processes emotion by fixing something useful rather than sitting with the feeling itself. Care shows up as acts of service more often than words.
Steadier Together
Feels most settled in balanced company and can struggle to know what it wants when alone. Will often smooth over its own discomfort just to keep the peace.
All or Nothing
Feels everything at full depth and shares almost none of it until trust is fully earned. Once betrayed, forgiveness is possible โ forgetting rarely is.
Needs Room to Roam
Needs room to roam, literally or figuratively, and gets uneasy when things feel too settled or small. Processes hard feelings by finding the bigger-picture meaning in them.
Feelings, Managed
Learned early to manage feelings rather than perform them, and takes emotional responsibility seriously โ sometimes too seriously. Comfort looks like competence and a plan.
Thinks First, Feels Second
Processes feelings by thinking about them first โ can look unemotional while actually just running things through logic before letting them land. Cares more about the collective than about being individually comforted.
Absorbs Everything
Soaks up the emotional atmosphere of any room it's in, sometimes losing track of which feelings are its own. Needs quiet, creative or spiritual outlets to avoid drowning in everyone else's.
